About this event
Art Film Outing: Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers. This art film at the Avalon Theater is based on a major current exhibition at the National Gallery in London which gathered 47 paintings and 14 drawings from Van Gogh’s two-year stay in Provence. The Guardian called it “a daring, dazzling exhibition,” while the Daily Telegraph exuded, “The sense of rapture is breathtaking. What an uplifting exhibition.” The National Gallery brings both familiar and rarely seen paintings together that represent Van Gogh’s most productive period between February 1888 and May 1889. While in Arles, he painted 200 canvases; while in Saint-Rémy in the asylum, he created 150 paintings. This film focuses on the art he produced, rather than the troubled personal details of Van Gogh’s life. As the promo explains, “Van Gogh became consumed with a passion for storytelling in his art, turning the world around him into vibrant, idealized spaces and symbolic characters.” Contact Caryn (cmusil@outlook.com) if you plan to attend, and she will help coordinate carpools and tickets ($16.50 for this show). The Avalon Theater is located at 5612 Connecticut Avenue, NW. Join us for lunch afterwards at nearby Bread and Chocolate.
